Evolution hair transplant

The evolution of hair transplant was originated in Japan by Dr. Okuda in the early 1930s. He was a Japanese Dermatologist. He addresses the hair loss problem for those patients who suffered from scalp injuries and burn victims. He introduces the “Punch Technique”. It was a groundbreaking technique for baldness treatment and was not available in the United States for many years because of World War II. In this technique, he extracted the sections of the hair-bearing scalp and implanted them in the damaged area and with time new hairs started to grow.

Baldness treatments options

 In 1940’s:

In the early years of the 1940s, this technique was refined by another Japanese surgeon and dermatologist named Dr. Tamura. He extracted the strip of tissues and inserted it into the individual grafts. These advancements remain unknown to the western world because of World War II.

In 1950’s: Hair restoration arrives in New York:

The evolution of hair transplant was originated in New York by Dr. Norman Orentriech in the year of the early 1050s. It was the first-ever hair restoration surgery method for male pattern baldness and his study was published after seven years he coined the term “Donor Dominance “. The main idea with this technique is that the transplanted follicle continues to display the same characteristics of the hair from where it’s taken. The circular patches were removed and then replaced with the same patch size bearing the skin that has much graft. The ideal graft size is 4 mm and this method is known as punch graft or standard graft method. The most common problem with this type of procedure is that it gives an unnatural appearance. The look was referred to as a doll’s hair.

In 1970’s:

Now Dr. Juri described the surgical rotation of a flap of hair bearing skin in the 1970s for the treatment of male baldness and Dr. Blanchard described the surgical excision of bald skin. Latterly this was known as alopecia reduction or scalp reduction.

In 1980’s and beyond: Micro and Mini graft Technique:

The evolution of hair transplant was invented in the later years of the 1980s to ’90s. In 1984 micro and mini grafts came to be refining the process. Surgeons used the smaller grafts to create a refined look. Instead of punching, they expunged strips of skin and then dissected them into smaller groups. These groups consist of 3 to 8 hairs called mini grafts. Surgeons insert these mini grafts into slits and slots made in the skin. Smaller grafts that contain 1 to 3 hairs are called micro grafts. Micro grafts are used to further refine the hairline. Dr. David Seager was one of the first surgeons who performed the procedure using the mini and micro grafting techniques.

Mini grafting

In 1990’s:

In the mid-1990s another technique called Mega sessions gained popularity. The use of a very large number of mini–micro grafts is known as Mega sessions. It requires the same skills.

In 1995: FUE and FUT the modern hair Transplant technique:

FUT-FUE techniques

The evolution of hair transplant rose in the last decade when Dr. Bernstein and Rassman in 1995 introduced the technique of FUT (follicular unit transplant). Today the procedure is much better than procedures from 20 years ago.  Dr. Bobby Limmer was the first who successfully performed using the FUE technique. Transplanting the natural groups of follicles is called FUT and these follicles grow in groups of 1 to 4 hairs, with the average group of about 2 hairs. FUT technique involves strip excision on the posterior scalp and then dissecting the strip into individual follicular units. The follicular units are then carefully transplanted into the receipt area.

FUE is a modern technique developed after FUT. In this technique individual follicular units are harvested from the scalp and then transplanted into the receipt area. Automated FUE involves using robotic devices. These devices help doctors to extract the grafts.
