To begin with, it is a process whereby a surgeon removes follicles from donor area through strip or follicular unit extraction method and uses it to fill the area where there is little or no visible hair. This process is completed under a local anaesthesia in a doctor’s office. The length of the procedure depends on the number of grafts  required by the patient. On average, one session lasts for around 4 to 6 hours. Additional sessions may be scheduled for patients who wish to obtain thicker look.

Recovery and growth

Recovery and transplanted hair growth timeline vary from person to person. Some patients have quick recovery within 24-48 hours while other may take few days. Similarly some patients are early growers while others late growers. Once the grafts are in place, you may feel that your scalp has become rather tender. Some people may require pain medication (this can also include anti-inflammatory and/or antibiotics) for a few days. Also, the doctor will cover your scalp with surgical dressing – for one or two days. Normally, you can return to work within 2 to 5 days of surgery. In the few weeks following surgery, you’ll witness the transplanted hair falling out. This is nothing to worry about as you’ll notice new strands within a couple of months. A lot of patients have experienced a considerable amount of results (around 60%) within 6 to 9 months of surgery.

 Risks and complication

Hair transplant risks are mild in nature and can be prevented. However, these risks have proven to be minimal. For instance, there are times when a patient may experience folliculitis (infection or inflammation of follicles). Fortunately, this can be easily relieved through compresses and antibiotics. Similarly, another probable risk is unexpected loss of newly transplanted hair, although this is seldom permanent. Surgical baldness treatment is the ideal choice for people who seem to be bothered by balding or thinning. It can help you significantly enhance your overall appearance along with boosting your self-confidence. However, one must understand that this process does not create new hair. As the name implies, just ‘transplants’ your existing follicle to a place where it can become more visible.  Accordingly, in order to benefit from your procedure and ensure proper growth, you must opt for transplantation only if you’re in good health along with choosing the right doctor. Remember to discuss the potential benefits and risks with your doctor to get the desired results.
